Dominika loves the Earth and sharing their favorite eco-friendly brands with readers.

Sustainable Eco-Friendly Clothing Workout Brands

Imagine it's June of 2020: COVID walks, Alexis Ren workout videos, the 12-3-30, Peloton, and the Lululemon Mirror. Does any of that ring a bell?

At-home workouts spiked extreme interest during that long period of time when we were all cooped up at home, and you know what else it spiked? An abundance of cheap workout clothes. Workout sets became one of Amazon's highest-selling items!

But now, with most people back in their normal routines, where working out doesn't typically fit into the schedule, all those clothes are going to waste.

So today, I thought I'd shed some light on 7 amazing workout brands that provide us with gym clothes made from sustainable materials, promote inclusivity and diversity, and provide their employees with healthy work environments.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Active Wear Companies

  1. Patagonia
  2. Girlfriend Collective
  3. REI
  4. Outdoor Voices
  5. Ref Active
  6. Organic Basics
  7. Allbirds

1. Patagonia

Patagonia has been a world leader in sustainable activewear for decades now.

They make their clothes out of recycled materials, produce rugged items that will last you a long time, have multiple programs that allow buyers to return used clothing for store credit, repair your clothes for free, and have been Fair Trade Certified since 2014.

Along with that Patagonia treats their workers with the utmost respect. The company offers full-paid business trips around the world, has fun, family-style work environments, and only has a 4% employee turnover rate every year.

The brand marks every checkmark for what an environmentally-friendly brand should look like.

2. Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective is a new brand that has come into the sustainability spotlight. Each piece of workout clothing you order is made from recycled materials, certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, and comes with a sustainability report.

Their best-selling leggings are each made from 25 recycled water bottles and are available in a size range of XXS-6XL, as are most of their clothing pieces.

The brand promotes diversity and inclusivity with their size ranges and promotional ads, as well as ethical, sustainable clothing through their use of recycled materials and eco-friendly dyes.

3. REI

Animal welfare, Fair Trade, organically grown cotton, bluesign®, recycled materials, and the Forest Stewardship Council™ are all sustainability attributes you can find when shopping at REI.

Selling mostly outdoor athletic clothing, REI understands the importance of giving back to our planet, as its demographic is people who love to spend time outdoors.

They're a size-inclusive brand, offering XXS-3X in most of their clothing, and every year 70% of their co-op's profits are given back to the community.

Additionally, every brand sold at REI has the same ethical standards as the company, further supporting how they help save our planet.

4. Outdoor Voices

Everyone loves a brand that offers buyers complete transparency, which is precisely what you get when shopping at Outdoor Voices.

On their website, they write, "Outdoor Voices is on a path toward a more sustainable future, but we aren't there yet. Our aim is progress, and our promise is transparency."

In order to produce their clothing, they source sustainable fabrics, like merino wool and recycled polyester, and they also practice ethical labor overseas. They offer a selection of sustainable pieces in the cutest styles, with sizes ranging up to 4XL.

Each and every year, the brand works harder towards supporting our Earth, and that's something that their buyers admire most about them.

5. Ref Active

Launched in 2021, Reformation's activewear clothing line, Ref Active, is now one of the most popular sustainable activewear lines.

Their products are made from Repreve, which is a material made 100% from recycled water bottles. They also provide sustainability reports on their website every year. Their fabric production uses 45% less energy than typical productions and 20% less water.

Prices range from $20 to $120, and sizes go up to 3X.

6. Organic Basics

Organic Basics provides gym clothes that are about as sustainable as it gets.

Each item of clothing has an Impact Index, which reports the brand's environmental footprint from making that product. They use recycled nylon and treat their clothes with a Bluesign-approved recycled silver salt known as Polygiene.

Even their website has a low carbon footprint, as images and descriptions are loaded based on a request, minimizing the site's power consumption.

Alongside that, their production is only done in factories that have the same sustainable vision as theirs. On their website's sustainability report, you can view the locations of all their factories and learn more about the recycled fabrics they use.

7. Allbirds

Allbirds has taken sustainability to a new level.

They're not just using the typical recycled materials that every company uses but have also started using plant-based materials, such as plant-based Tencel and ethically sourced wool.

By 2030 they plan to reduce their carbon footprint to 0, and their website features amazing information on what else they're doing to help our planet.

They offer clothing and shoes for men, women, and kids, and their sizes go up to 3XL.
