The CIGA Design X Series Skeleton Watch

The CIGA Design X Series Skeleton Watch

Over the years, I've reviewed many timepieces, ranging from inexpensive quartz watches to high-quality mechanical chronographs.

Oddly enough, the most popular of these articles showcased an inexpensive skeleton watch from Winner. It was not a remarkably accurate watch, and it came attached to a PU leather strap that fell apart within a month.

Why was that cheap timepiece so popular? More to the point, since everyone carries a smartphone, why would they bother strapping on a watch?

The answer is self-expression. For a woman, it is relatively easy to stand out; a little makeup, clothing, and jewelry are all it takes. For men, however, the tools are limited to facial hair and their choice of a timepiece.

I like the look of a skeleton watch. A timepiece of this type provides a stunning view of dozens of spring-powered spinning gears working together to track time accurately.

Today I am closely examining the uniquely designed X Series watch from CIGA Design.

Description

This square-shaped timepiece is 11.8 millimeters thick with a diameter of 48 millimeters. My X Series watch head weighs in at 74 grams. While its case is composed of stainless steel, a titanium version, weighing 58 grams, is also available.

My new watch features a black case with orange accents. It lacks a dial, allowing the interior of the timepiece to be viewed through its synthetic sapphire crystal and mineral crystal backplate. CIGA Design offers this watch in a variety of color combinations.

The X Series watch is powered by a 25 jewel CD-01 automatic movement developed by CIGA Design and manufactured by Seagull. It boasts a 40-hour reserve. Corner-mounted coil springs protect against shock.

A silicone and a nylon watch strap are included with this timepiece. Each of these 22mm straps is fitted with a quick-release mechanism.

The Manufacturer

Shenzhen CIGA Design Co. Ltd was founded in 2016. This company is committed to developing original designs that combine modern mechanical art with self-expression.

Visual Appeal

This timepiece is large, bold, and designed to catch the eye. And, unlike many of the skeleton watches I have previously tested, the X Series does not neglect quality in favor of style.

The most remarkable aspect of a skeleton watch is the ability to view its myriad of components working effectively together. I, for example, understand that pulling out the crown of a hackable watch will force its second hand to stop. However, I didn't realize until I experimented with the X Series timepiece that pulling out the crown applied a break to the watch's balance wheel, bringing the entire system to a halt.

Durability

The X Series watchcase is composed of 316L stainless steel, providing excellent resistance against rust.

Both included straps are comfortable, well-constructed, and fitted with a quick-release system.

Corner-mounted coil springs protect the CD-01 movement from shock and a synthetic sapphire crystal provides good scratch resistance.

Water-resistance is rated at 3ATM. This timepiece should not be worn while swimming.

The Movement

The CD-01 movement was developed by CIGA Design and manufactured by the Tianjin Seagull Watch Group. Founded in 1955, Seagull is the world's largest manufacturer of mechanical watch movements.

This 25-jewel automatic mechanical movement is hackable and runs at 21600Hz.

The accuracy of the CD-01 movement is rated at -15~+30 seconds over a 24-hour period. During tests, my watch gained six seconds over 24 hours. This is an excellent result for a mechanical watch in X Series' price category.

Power reserve is rated at 40 hours. My watch kept accurate time for 44 hours after it was wound and set aside.

Overall Impression

The CIGA Design X Series timepiece is a large and impressive watch that will catch the eye. Its movement was designed in-house and constructed by a well-respected movement manufacturer.

While my timepiece's watchcase is composed of high-grade 316L stainless steel, a lightweight titanium version is available. This watch is fitted with a synthetic sapphire crystal, and four coil springs protect it from shock. Although water resistance meets the basic 3ATM rating, I am hopeful that future models will feature an improvement in that regard.

I was particularly impressed by the accuracy of my watch, which gains only six seconds per day, keeping it comfortably within the rating provided by the manufacturer. The CIGA Design X Series watch is recommended.
