Must-Have Ladies' Watches

A new watch is a great way to improve your own style or to show someone else how much you care about them.

The watches reviewed here start at under $100. A few are more expensive than that, but are still unbeatable deals. I'll also give you some ideas and suggestions about current styles and trends.

You may ask: What does my wife wear on her wrist?

She has a stunning TAG Heuer and a Michele, but let me tell you, she wants them all! I think having variety and different materials when it comes to wearing a timepiece is essential. Whether you are an executive, a student, or just a regular plain Jane, you are sure to find something that suits you.

What Kind of Watch Suits You Best?

Michele watches.
Michele watches.

When buying a women's watch, there are many things to consider. Honestly, most women should probably own at least three watches, which we will go over, but the truth is, most women favor one watch and will wear it regardless of what they're doing.

My wife is a professional and works in a corporate office building. She owns a watch with a thin band that blends into her outfit. When we dine out, she puts on a flashier watch that says something about her personality. On the weekend, she'll wear a throw-around kind of watch. One that isn't lost if she bangs it against the car or submerges it into a pool.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1. What is my price point?

This isn't to say you can't get a quality watch without breaking the bank, but if you want a piece of substance and quality, you're going to have to spend at least a few hundred dollars. Don't be fooled by "nice looking" watches that are $50. They are junk and will not last.

You can get a decent quality watch for well under $500, but that's up to you. Watches sell for every price imaginable, you just have to decide where you stand.

2) What materials do I prefer?

Do you like a leather band? How about a metal bracelet? Is gold your style, or stainless steel? Are you looking for a jeweled inner-working 12-diamond face, or will a simple white dial do the job?

These are questions that one must ask before going shopping, and all are great options. Leather bands are great for going from formal to informal. Jewels are going to be flashy and should be contained to watches that you want to show off. White and black simple faces are conservative while gold is traditional.

3) Is this an investment piece?

For most of us, the answer is no. Some watches however, do go up in value. For example, a nicely cared-for of Rolex will hold its own and increase in value over time. On the other hand, if your watch isn't a collectible or rare, simply take care of it and know that it can last a lifetime. Perhaps it will be something you hand down to a family member or use for the rest of your life.

4) Am I looking for a universal watch or several for many situations?

I talked about my personal situation above, but you must ask yourself this question. If you're looking for a single watch, I would recommend something conservative yet fun. Perhaps a TAG Heuer. They are incredibly well-built, timelessly styled, and are in the middle-of-the-road when it comes to price. Choose a dial color that suits you and stick with stainless steel links. If that's not your style, but you still want a single watch, I would go for a nice brown leather banded watch.

5) What is my personal style?

Are you flashy? Are you conservative? Outdoorsy? Cube dweller?

Whatever your style, pick a watch that complements it. There's no need for someone who spends most of their time in a cubicle to have a diamond-encrusted watch unless it really fits their style. Or for a farmer to wear a Rolex (though my farmer grandfather did). Watches should be practical. A nightclub owner wearing a calculator watch simply will not do. You get my drift.

Whatever your style, always comparison shop when choosing a watch. Personally, I'm a big believer in Amazon. You can find almost any watch conceivable there, most backed by full warranties and easily returnable. What I like most is that there is no tax and shipping generally is free or inexpensive.

Michele Women's Deco Day Chronograph Dial Watch

In a word: stunning.

Inspired by his daughter Michele, second-generation watchmaker Jack Barouh began his rise to prominence in the watch industry by creating a line of colorful children's watches that were extremely well-received. Sophisticated, grown-up designs followed, and ultimately a new fine watch brand was born. Michele Watches made its debut with the celebrated CSX Diamond collection, the first of many collections to follow.

Michele Barouh herself joined the company in 2000, having quite literally grown up in the business, and now serves as its Creative Director. Michele Watches transcends global boundaries, relying on international designers to create high-quality timepieces for the world market. Sophisticated and unique, the MW Collection displays cutting-edge fashion, an unwavering attention to detail, and an emphasis on quality and value that honors three generations of the watchmaking tradition.

This model has a stainless steel case and bracelet, a fixed stainless steel bezel set with diamonds, a mother of pearl dial with silver-tone hands and index hour markers.

Pebble Smartwatch for iPhone and Android

Pebble Smartwatch for iPhone and Android

The Pebble Smartwatch connects to your iPhone or Android device via Bluetooth so you get the information you need exactly when you need it. Designed to make your life easier, Pebble provides personalized notifications and downloadable apps to keep you in the loop when you're on the go. You can also customize with watch faces and apps to suit your personal style and interests. It features a long-lasting battery, user-friendly operation, and a screen that's readable even in bright daylight or under water. Pebble comes with a USB charging cable and a Quick Start Guide.

Pebble has a straightforward, wearable design that lets you get the information you need in just one glance. The e-Paper display is easy to read even in direct sunlight so you can always see what's going on inside or out. Lightweight and comfortable to wear, Pebble won't weigh you down when you're on the move. Its 5 ATM salt or fresh water rating means you'll still be accessible if caught in a downpour or swimming, and the scratch-resistant display can take some hard knocks while keeping its good looks. The battery conveniently lasts five to seven days on a single charge.

Pebble does more than just tell the time. It displays email, SMS, Caller ID, and other notifications from your favorite apps right on your wrist, allowing you to leave your phone in your pocket while you’re in meetings, social engagements, or on the go. Pebble alerts you with a silent vibration to incoming calls, meeting reminders, and notifications from apps like Facebook and Twitter. And because of its long-lasting battery life, Pebble blends into your day-to-day activities without slowing you down while you're running, cycling, or just going about your busy schedule.

You can also try different watch faces every day and there is an app to create our own watch face.

For those of you that don't like the Pebble because they think that it looks cheap, know that prior to the Pebble, all of my watches (except the one that I use to work in the yard) were fancy $500+ timepieces. I now wear my Pebble everywhere. I meet with executives, and often I'll show it to them and next thing they want to know what it costs and where to get it.

Michael Kors Women's Ritz Tortoise Watch

Tortoise is a neutral that works with every style. The knurled gold-tone topring adds a chic textural touch; the crystal markers make it glam. This watch caught my eye immediately. I have received so many compliments on this watch. It goes with everything. Even when I wear silver, I am able to incorporate it into my outfit.

I love this watch. At first it was too tight and I wasn't sure if I cared for the style and I was going to exchange it, but I couldn't return it due to minor scratches, and instead got some extender links free of charge. Since then I've fallen in love with it and get many compliments. Could not be happier now with my purchase.

Michael Kors Quartz, Black Dial with Black Goldtone Bracelet

Michael Kors Quartz, Black Dial with Black Goldtone Bracelet watch.
Michael Kors Quartz, Black Dial with Black Goldtone Bracelet watch.

Black is always classic and Michael Kors updates this standby by wrapping the case and bracelet in sporty polyurethane. The glossy black dial is striking with its shiny gold-tone numerals and indexes.

The watch is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. I have a very small wrist. I have tried big watches before and always send them back. This watch came and although it is indeed large and I had to have links taken out, I kept it and am glad I did. It's pretty, comfortable, and I can see what time it is without my glasses. I can also get it wet! I am a bit of a sucker for Michael Kors merchandise anyway, and this watch was no exception.

TOYWATCH: Classic Collection

In the fall of 2005, Milan-based designer and wristwatch aficionado Marco Mavilla designed the first TOYWATCH. A lightweight, oversized plastic watch, inspired by high-design timepieces, TOYWATCH is unexpected, arresting and irreverent. Under the direction of fine-watch collector and TOYWATCH USA CEO, Randy Gordon, TOYWATCH was brought to the USA in the summer of 2006. An anti-luxury statement in a luxury-obsessed culture, TOYWATCH has become the "it" wristwatch and the "must-have" item among style influentials and tastemakers. The brand ignited a firestorm in the fashion, design and accessories industries and has been heralded as a sensation by the press.

I bought this in the summer of 2010 and have never had any problems. I haven't seen any other white watch that I would want more than this one (except for the Chanel J-12 but that's a whole other universe). It still looks great and runs perfectly. I haven't had to change the battery yet. I don't wear it every day, maybe once a week but it isn't scratched up at all. Even the crystal is in good shape for being a big watch that might get banged about a bit.

TAG Heuer Women's Aquaracer

TAG Heuer traces its roots to the small Swiss village of St-Imier where, in 1860, a watchmaker named Edouard Heuer opened his first shop. His vision was to create remarkable timepieces that pushed the envelope of innovation and precision. The company's reputation grew, and Heuer's first patent for a chronograph mechanism in 1882 was followed by a long list of achievements: the first stopwatch accurate to 1/100 of a second, the first dashboard stopwatch for race cars, the first miniature electronic timekeeping device accurate to 1/1000th of a second, and the first automatic movement with a microrotor, to name just a few.

Over the years, Heuer's reputation for gold-standard precision earned the company the privilege of providing official timing services for a number of world-class competitive sporting events, including the Olympic Games, the FIS Ski World Cup, and the FIA Formula 1 World Championships. To this day, TAG Heuer maintains a close association with the world of competitive sports and enjoys a devoted following among sports celebrities and enthusiasts. In 1985, Heuer joined the TAG (Techniques D'Avant-Garde) group, and the TAG Heuer name and logo were created. Now one of the most recognized and sought-after watch brands in the world, TAG Heuer continues its reputation of innovative design and technological excellence, creating prestigious timepieces that are always at the cutting edge of precision, reliability and style.

I bought this watch for my wife as a second anniversary gift. It is an excellent watch. The fact that the TAG Heuer brand is printed in green and red makes it look even better. My wife says that she can wear this watch with either fancy dresses or with casual clothes. I strongly recommend it.

Michael Kors Mid-Sized Chronograph Gold Tone Womens Watch

A true classic radiating style from every element, the Michael Kors Gold Dial Gold Tone Link Band Watch is the classic timepiece you have been waiting for. This exceptional watch begins with a round 38-millimeter gold-toned stainless steel case with a fixed gold-toned bezel and a textured gold-toned crown with two pushers. These elements surround a golden dial, which is protected by a hardened mineral crystal and features gold-toned index and Arabic numeral hour markers and luminous gold-toned hands powered by precise quartz movement. The dial also features three chronograph sub-dials and a date display window between the 4 and 5 o'clock positions. A gold-toned stainless steel link bracelet straps this watch to the wrist, while a deployment clasp ensures its secure placement. Finally, this watch boasts water resistance up to 330 feet (100 meters). To get something timeless, you have to go for something that never goes out of style, which means you need this watch.

I'd been eyeing this watch for a while and finally decided to check it out in person at the Michael Kors store. I was planning to buy it on Amazon since it was marked down on here to $187.50, but when I mentioned that at the MK store and showed them the listing, they informed me that they offered price matching, so I got it there. Just a helpful hint to anyone who has an MK store in their area. The watch is beautiful and very stylish. Yes, it's definitely larger than an average ladies watch, but this is the mid-sized version, so it's not huge like the oversized one.

Michael Kors Women's Silver Runway Watch

Simply perfect style from MICHAEL by Michael Kors. Watch features a stainless steel bracelet and case. Silvertone chronograph dial with logo, date window, three subdials, and a mix of silvertone numerals and stick indexes. Three hands. Quartz movement. Water resistant to 100 meters. Two-year limited warranty.

Reviewers say: This is a beautiful, expensive looking watch. I searched high and low for a chrongraph that looks sleek and modern, not frilly and overdone, and this one fits the bill perfectly.

The first thing to note is that it is large and heavy! I love the look, but it definitely looks more like a men's watch. On my super-tiny wrist the face almost covers the front of my wrist, with just one link showing on either side. Again, this is the look I was going for but be aware that it is large. Also, be prepared to get links taken out. Of course this is standard procedure for this type of watch, but the way this one came was even too large for my boyfriend.

On the wrist this watch is very shiny and eye-catching without being too "blingy" as it does not have any sparkle. If you're looking for big chunky watch that looks much more expensive than it really is, I think this is an excellent choice.

This is a beautiful, expensive looking watch. I searched high and low for a chrongraph that looks sleek and modern, not frilly and overdone and this one fits the bill perfectly.

Michael Kors Women's Chronograph Tortoise Watch

Sporty with a surprisingly casual look, the Michael Kors Chronograph Tortoise Watch has style to spare. Both its bracelet-style stainless steel band and case are finished in brown for a rich, relaxed look that nicely side-steps the ruggedness of other chronographs. Gold-toned bezel, hour markers, function buttons, and hands provide a smart complement while crystal chips on the hour markers add shine. Three chronographs track seconds, minutes, and 24-hour information. A date window sits at the four o'clock position. A durable mineral crystal, Japanese quartz movement, and water-resistance to 330 feet (100 meters) mean the Michel Kors can take a knock without skipping a beat. The band's deployment-style clasp keeps it securely in place.

Reviewers say: I haven't worn a watch in at least five years. I bought the silver one with the clear band as a graduation gift for a friend. I saw this one when we were looking and fell in love. To make it worse, a lady walked by us in the store with it on. Amazon had it for much cheaper than the two department stores, so I bought it there. It came today and I am in love. I can't wait until tomorrow so that I can have the band sized.

Invicta Women's Square Angel Diamond Stainless Steel Chronograph Watch

Glistening with exquisite silver accents, the Invicta Women's Square Angel Diamond Stainless Steel Chronograph Watch catches the eye starting with its ornate diamond-encrusted stainless steel bezel. Protected by a fine mineral crystal, the square silver-tone dial is contrasted with crisp white stick hourly markers and matching hour and minute hands, while an easy-to-read date window is perched at four o'clock. The spherically-bordered inner dial is embellished with three chronograph subdials with black markers and sweeping hands. The dazzling silver-tone bezel, held by a matching stainless steel case, features a crown set with an eye-catching blue jewel. Silver tones continue to the sleek stainless steel linking bands that easily fasten with a deployment clasp. Water resistant to 330 feet (100 M), the Angel Diamond also boasts the reliability of Swiss-quartz movement.

I have been looking at this watch online for months and finally decided to get it for Christmas. Yes, it is larger than you might think, and it has some definite weight to it, but the quality of this piece is very impressive. Remember that this watch retails for $695. It is no flimsy watch by any stretch of the imagination. The face is large and it is thick. I followed the instructions to set the time and had no problems doing so. I also ordered the Invicta watch sizing tool when I ordered the watch. It came with no instructions, but once I got the hang of it, it was smooth sailing.

I had to watch a YouTube video on how to operate the deployment clasp. It is a bit difficult to open despite knowing how. It is tight, which may be a good thing in the grand scheme of things. I have a thing for watches and definitely expect this watch to draw a fair amount of attention and commentary. It has a definite presence on the wrist and is quite the impressive piece. If you do not like large faces, weight, and thickness in a watch, then do not order this.

Timex Women's Sports Digital Watch

This mid-sized Timex Sports digital watch features a durable pink and silver resin watch case with easy-to-access side buttons and quickly readable large digital display. Sport timing features include a 24-hour chronograph and 24-hour countdown timer. Other features include a daily alarm, dual time zone display, and water resistance to 50 meters (165 feet). It's completed by a comfortable gray polyurethane strap with a tapered profile.

The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer.

This reliable watch has withstood two deployments to Iraq, among other things, and still works great. Date, alarm, Indiglo, stopwatch, and dual time zone features have been very useful. Plastic parts aren't colored all the way through and are wearing off on some edges, but that's absolutely acceptable given the wear I've put on it. The face is still clear with no major scratches despite my scraping it against everything. I don't think you can beat the durability and functionality of this watch for the price.

Michael Kors Women's MK5039 Ritz Horn Watch

We can't get enough of the subtle yet sophisticated variation in the horn pattern. The knurled gold-tone topring adds a chic textural touch.

Sometimes you need a watch that makes a statement. The horn is the perfect sheen. Keep in mind this is a chunkier watch. To be able to carry off this stylish and fun accessory can sometimes look like a five-year-old playing with mom's jewelry. But, alas, Michael Kors never fails to deliver a beautiful timepiece. Anyone wondering how to update with chunkier styles should start here!

Timex Sports Personal Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Combining stylish looks with heart rate monitoring features, this larger Timex Personal Heart Rate Monitor watch (model T5G971) can be worn by both men and women. It features a chest strap heart rate monitor, easily accessible function buttons, durable resin case, and comfortable resin strap with a stylish tapered profile. For integrating heart rate monitoring into your training, this watch enables you to continuously track your heart rate during exercise as well as pre-set target heart rate zones with alarms that notify you when you are out of the zone. It also offers an automatic activity timer and a workout review that recalls activity time and average/peak heart rates. This streamlined watch also has a month/day/date display with 12/24-hour time.

The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet), which protects it from rain and water splashes. All Timex heart rate monitor sensors have batteries that can be replaced by consumers without requiring them to be returned to the manufacturer.

XOXO Women's Rhinestone Accent Gold-Tone Bracelet Watch

The casual and fashionable XOXO Women's Rhinestone Accent Gold-Tone Bracelet Watch features a round 38mm gold-toned case with beautiful rhinestones around the bezel. The imitation white Mother-of-pearl dial, which is protected by a glass crystal, features three faux chronograph and silver indexes. The shiny gold-tone, three-link watch band straps this watch to the wrist, while an elegant jewelry clasp makes sure it stays there. This timepiece is also powered by analog-quartz movement and is ideal for everyday wear.

First you need to know that this watch isn't tacky. You're probably thinking that the crystals might over-do it but the watch is perfect and doesn't look enormous on a woman's wrist.

From what I have learned, most women will need to get a few links taken out and adjusted as XOXO has provided a very ample band length, you can do this yourself or pay somebody.
