Aside from writing, one of my other gigs is working with married couples (and couples who plan on getting married). Whenever I’m in a premarital session, one thing that I tell people is it’s extremely important to be flexible with your partner because, the reality is, as you continue to do life with them, they are going to change a lot — and quite possibly often.

In fact, the Richard J. Needham quote, “You don't marry one person; you marry three: the person you think they are, the person they are, and the person they are going to become as the result of being” is what helps to drive this particular point home perfectly.

It’s also one of the first things that I thought about when I watched this sweet exchange between @sspelaez and her beloved. Take a look.

How precious is he? He was trying to find as many compliments as possible in under 30 seconds. I adore that.

In order for me to get some context, I went through her other posts. It looks like she went a few inches past her bra strap (easily) to a few inches below her shoulders (when she had her scarf on, I thought it was going to be more like a pixie cut, to be honest). Yeah, it’s a change, for sure. But I knew he was gonna be fine regardless.

Why? Because look at how he looks at his wife naturally. He cherishes her on a billion different levels, so I already knew that he was gonna be like, “Babe, if you like it, I love it!” — and not in a disingenuous way either. More like on an, “I chose you and that automatically makes you beautiful to me” level.

In the midst of so much on the world wide web, it’s nice to have moments where we can be reminded that real love is still out here showin’ up and out.

Here’s to a big dose of acceptance and flexibility. In a long-term relationship, it’s the kind of fuel that can take two people a really long way.
