Your skin is your body's first line of defense against the harsh elements of the outside world, and the elements get even harsher in the cold months of winter. By following just five quick tips, you can fight off dry winter skin in just a few minutes each day.

1. Make Oil Your Best Friend

Contrary to popular belief, oil is not the enemy to your complexion. While many of us try to avoid oil, certain products can be a miracle cure for almost any skin ailment, especially those of us plagued by dry winter skin.

If your issue is all over skin dehydration, products like Avon's Original Skin So Soft bath oil hydrates skin while simultaneously creating a protective barrier to keep your skin healthy. Provide extra nourishment by using a full collection of products designed just for the winter season, such as Skin So Soft's Winter Soft Collection.

For dry patches on the face, try a more refined oil recommended by your dermatologist. Be careful not to pick up food-grade oils at the grocery store, because the wrong oil can cause inflamed pores or irritation.

2. Take Warm, Not Hot, Showers and Baths

Heat damages keratin, which is an essential protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails.

It may be tempting to step into a steamy shower to combat the weather, but it can actually potentially damage skin and may lead to flaking, cracks, and even rashes if practiced on a regular basis. In fact, in addition to irritating dry skin, very hot water has been proven to worsen acne-prone skin.

Instead, opt for as close to a lukewarm or warm shower as you can stand for your daily routine, and save the hot baths for a special treat.

Your skin - and your utility bill - will thank you for it.

3. Don't Forget About SPF

Even in the chilly days of winter, the sun can damage your skin. Not only does sun exposure increase your chances for cancer, but it can advance signs of aging and worsen already dry skin. Make sure your daily moisturizer contains SPF and is approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation for Daily Use like Avon's Anew Skinvinsible Day Lotion with SPF 50.

4. Have a Skincare Routine and Use It

Your body works hard to keep itself in balance. Using products that strip skin of its natural oils without replenishing moisture often causes your body to make twice as much oil, while using too much without cleansing doesn't allow your skin to produce its own. Develop a routine based on your skincare needs and follow it to maintain healthy skin year-round, making sure to adjust your skincare regimen as needed.

5. Provide an Extra Layer of Protection

One of the easiest, most effective ways to ensure soft, supple skin is to protect it from the elements. Gloves not only keep hands warm, but limit sun exposure when worn outdoors. Another great time to protect your skin is during your sleep. Sleep gives your body a chance to heal with the least effort on your part. While wearing socks and gloves to bed while slathered with lotion may not be appealing to everyone, Avon's cult classic Silicone Glove is also effective in maintain moisture overnight.
